The reason for this is the city’s very strategic location for trade, as the city is adjacent to the Indian Ocean. Today, Mombasa belongs to the country Kenya. However, it was not until 1963 that Mombasa became part of Kenya. Until then, the city was part of Zanzibar, Tanzania.
